- Applications
CD14 is a key protein in the innate immune response, primarily expressed on macrophages and involved in the detection of bacterial infections. It can exist in two forms: membrane-bound (mCD14) and soluble (sCD14). Membrane-bound CD14, anchored to the cell surface via a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) tail, plays a role in binding to lipopolysaccharides (LPS). Soluble CD14, which can be secreted or released from the cell membrane, is involved in LPS detection as well.
- Membrane-bound CD14 (mCD14): Anchored to the cell surface by a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) tail, it binds LPS to recognize bacterial infections.
- Soluble CD14 (sCD14): Found in plasma, it is either secreted or shed from the membrane and continues to function in LPS detection.
The study of CD14 is essential for understanding immune response mechanisms, particularly in bacterial infections.
